Our Members

Mission: To dramatically increase access to solar power by developing member-owned community solar Photovoltaic (PV) projects. We do this in a socially and economically responsible fashion. Our first system should be built this summer (141 kW). We are currently developing legal documents for two different ways to finance projects: Yearly Subscriptions or Fractional Owners. Community Solar Work:

Mission: All people have a right to a clean and healthy environment in which their communities can live, work, learn, play and thrive. Towards this vision, APEN brings together a collective voice to develop an alternative agenda for environmental, social and economic justice.

Community Solar Work: APEN organizes our communities to develop and govern local clean energy resources in the neighborhoods that need it most - poor and working class communities of color that have been at the frontlines of fighting big polluters. Locally, that looks like advancing community designed and governed solar and solar battery projects that increase climate resiliency in the face of the regular environmental crises our communities face, as well as the growing impacts of wildfires and extreme weather. That means turning municipal buildings, apartments, schools, places of worship, and community centers into sites for renewable energy generation and storage in ways that build the community’s expertise about clean energy, governance skills, and social cohesion. At the state level, we’re winning policies that drive climate justice investments into neighborhoods and communities at scale, while using the local organizing to deepen a policy understanding of what climate resilience can be.

Mission: Black Sun Light Sustainability (BSLS) is at the forefront of transformative change, collaborating, connecting and changing communities both domestically and abroad. With a focus on all aspects of energy and climate liberation.

Mission: The Boston Community Solar Cooperative was organized just after the Inflation Reduction Act passed in late 2022 to take advantage of the tax-subsidy provisions of the new law. It offers members the opportunity to earn or purchase an ownership share in the solar co-op. The co-op earns revenue from the sale of electricity at a rate lower than the local utility charges and shares it profits with members who are shareholders. The cooperative is currently developing a rooftop solar array at the site of the Dorchester Food Co-op and hopes to replicate the approach in other Boston neighborhoods.

Mission: The Center for Sustainable Communities is a BIPOC founded and led non profit organization with the aim of making our most undeserved communities greener, cleaner, and safer through equity and environmental justice. The CSC utilizes science, technology, engineering, data science and research to implement a wide variety of projects and programs with the objective of providing just solutions to mitigate social, racial, health, climate and environmental justice issues. The Center for Sustainable Communicates along with HTS Enterprise formed the Sustainability Solutions Group and Institute works collectively to create a more just, sustainable, resilient and sustainable world for all.

Mission: Cleveland Owns is a economic democracy incubator that builds cooperative businesses and leads campaigns for community control of resources.

Community Solar Work: Cleveland Owns is incubating the Cleveland Solar Cooperative, a member-led group building Ohio’s first community-owned rooftop solar array. We support The BC, a Black-led neighborhood group working to building a community solar garden and the community solar policy needed to make it happen.

Mission: Climate Justice Alliance (CJA) formed in 2013 to create a new center of gravity in the climate movement by uniting frontline communities and organizations into a formidable force. Our translocal organizing strategy and mobilizing capacity is building a Just Transition away from extractive systems of production, consumption and political oppression, and towards resilient, regenerative and equitable economies. We believe that the process of transition must place race, gender and class at the center of the solutions equation in order to make it a truly Just Transition.

Mission: Co-op Power is a grassroots vehicle to counter political and social trends that compromise the environment and economy. Locally owned group-based businesses can anchor capital and build community in ways few other business structures can.

Mission: The mission of the Cooperativa Hidroeléctrica de la Montaña is to develop, manage and provide energy services from renewable sources for the Owner-Members of the cooperative.

Community Solar Work: Cooperative Energy Futures (CEF) has developed a proven model for LMI and BIPOC community-led, community-owned solar in Minnesota. CEF has developed 6.8MW ($16.5M) of LMI-accessible community solar arrays that are community-led and community-owned across urban, suburban, and rural Minnesota, offsetting the utility bills of over 700 households for the next 25 years. CEF is currently developing another 6.1MW of community solar across Minnesota in 2024.

Mission: The Emerald Cities Collaborative (ECC) pursues a high-road approach to greening our cities, building resilient regional economies and strengthening our democracy. By building cross-sector collaborations, acutely focused on those historically left out of the economic and community development process, we help communities unleash their capacity to build high-road economies that are more sustainable, economically just and democratic.

Community Solar Work: Support CBOs exploring or actively working towards community-owned solar through the Emergent Community Capacity Building Program, which centers our Energy Democracy Curricula as well as leverages infrastructure and IRA federal investments.

Mission: HOPE Village Revitalization is a community-led, community driven organization whose mission is to move the HOPE Village neighborhood forward in a way that mitigates disparities in wealth, privilege and educational resources. We pledge to collaborate and be part of the collective working toward equitable and sustainable development in Detroit, and to be known as a model of excellence, integrity and community decision making.

Mission: IECE-J40 is a statewide nonprofit network of organizations working together to advance a sustainable environment while creating sustainable, just and inclusive economies with opportunities for all — an approach we call "Aiming High". IECE-J40 supports energy, green infrastructure and other sustainable development projects that not only contribute to the resilience of our state but also ensure an equity stake for low-income and disadvantaged communities of color in the green economy. This includes developing the economic infrastructure for family-supporting wages and career paths for residents of such communities, as well as contracting opportunities for women, BIPOC and other disadvantaged businesses. IECE-J40 is committed to working effectively with Indiana leaders, public and private partners, and individual residents who care about the future of our energy system and economy.

Mission: People Power Solar Cooperative invests in community-led projects that create alternatives to PG&E and other private utilities by decentralizing, democratizing, distributing, and diversifying the energy system. Ensuring that power to live can be accessed by all without compromising the health and safety of any community, today and for generations to come.

Community Solar Work: People Power Solar Cooperative is like a grid for the transmission and distribution of another kind of power: the combined, connected, and amplified potential of many people sharing resources, ideas, skills, connections, and labor in infinitely creative ways. Together, we take action to advance energy justice by being the change we want to see - practicing energy co-governance and opposing policies that allow energy injustice to continue. We build tangible alternatives to private utilities, like community-owned solar installations, mutual aid projects that provide battery access during power shut-downs, and solar-powered community fridges.

Mission: The mission of PUSH Buffalo is to mobilize residents to create strong neighborhoods with quality, affordable housing; to expand local hiring opportunities; and to advance racial, economic, and environmental justice in Buffalo.

Mission: Together New Orleans is a broad-based coalition of congregations and community-based organizations in the greater New Orleans area, with the capacity to address community problems large and small. The coalition is deliberate about crossing the lines of race, religion, neighborhood, and political affiliation. We work on issues affecting families and communities, and we are a strictly non-partisan organization.
