Program Summary

SLIC is a remote, 6-month service learning internship program that aims to provide capacity-building experience to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) interested in entering the solar industry, offering opportunities for jobs, entrepreneurship, leadership, and helping planetary survival. Interns in the SLIC program will simultaneously receive training and work remotely to support community-based organizations (CBOs) that are building capacity to implement community-owned solar projects.

Training is both synchronous (in real-time) and asynchronous (on your own time, at your own pace) and begins with an overview of community-owned solar (COS). Additional training sessions will occur over 6 months, along with staff check-ins.

From SLIC Alumni

"Without a doubt, this experience will pave the way for me..."

“This internship provided me with the chance to delve into the fundamental aspects of COS, engage with current community solar leaders via Zoom, and forge connections with solar leaders... Without a doubt, this experience will pave the way for me to contribute to the development of community solar projects.”

"I feel a lot more connected to renewable energy issues as they relate to local communities."

“I feel a lot more connected to renewable energy issues as they relate to local communities. Coming from an environmental science background, I was used to thinking about renewables as another silo within the environmental field but this program helped me to draw some important connections between solar and democracy.”

"I found it inspiring..."

“I found it inspiring to be able to see how each of the members, from their different forums and capacities, support the fight for both an equitable energy future and a reality where social justice abounds. And I must highlight that the work and enthusiasm of [PSEF staff] regarding achieving an accessible and clean energy future in each meeting and interaction is inspiring and admirable, and their fighting and organizing vibes are contagious.”
